Eye movements in dual and visual reading

Resumen

We typically process verbal information through individual sensory channels: visual (reading), auditory (listening), or tactile (Braille), although these modalities can also be combined (e.g., reading and listening simultaneously). Inclusive educational technology, such as voice-to-text transcription (VTT), enhances comprehension, particularly for individuals with low auditory discrimination and attention deficits. In this project, we used eye-tracking to analyze eye movements during reading in visual and dual modes (visual + auditory). Using the Tobii Spark system and Tobii Pro Lab software, participants read two texts of similar difficulty in both modes. After reading, they completed a comprehension test. The results obtained from 32 participants (aged 16-53) show that fixation rate and reading comprehension increase with age. Furthermore, the fixation rate is higher in the visual modality than in the dual modality. Our preliminary results show no significant differences in reading comprehension when comparing both modalities. One student with dyslexia greatly benefited from the dual modality during the experiment and also during an exam with 50% adaptation in dual modality, suggesting a promising line for future research.
