SEX DIFFERENCES IN THE PERCEPTION OF THE NONVERBAL FACIAL SIGNALS OF OTHERS: A REVIEW

Resumen

Stereotypes exist regarding possible sex differences in the perception of nonverbal communication in social settings. This review paper is an attempt at determining whether there are biological bases for these stereotypes, particularly concerning the perception of the nonverbal social signals present on others’ faces. Specifically, will be discussed the existing literature on the differences between males and females in (1) the perception of others’faces, gaze cues, and trustworthiness, (2) in attention-orienting to gaze, (3) in recognizing and processing facial emotions, , and (4) in how their diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) may influence their perception of others’ nonverbal facial signals. The aim is to establish the basis of what is known about the influence of sex on nonverbal social signals present on others’ faces so as to enable problematics to emerge for further research endeavors.
